Richard asks…
is this diabetes or borderline or what?
A few months ago I had a fasting blood test which showed my glucose was 6.0. The doctor repeated the test a week ago, and it was 6.1 I have now been referred for a glucose tolerance test. I am wondering – does this mean I have diabetes? Is it likely that I have diabetes? I put on loads of weight in pregnancy (baby is now 12 mths old) and am dieting. If I lose weight, can this cure the diabetes? If I am borderline, will it make me be normal? I had a GTT when pregnant because my dad has diabetes. It was normal then. So it is in the last year or so that my sugars have gone up. For what it’s worth – I eat little ‘bad’ food as I am dieting! edit to add: I am 23 years old and apart from being overweight, I am healthy

Sara answers:
6.0 is barely prediabetes but your dr must have a reason for sending you for a glucose tolerance test. Normally you’d be considered to have prediabetes with a blood sugar of 8.0 – 10.0 so 6 isn’t too bad. Improving your lifestyle my help prevent you from getting diabetes, but it sounds like this is more to do with your pregnancy than your lifestyle. I think that you just need to get the results of the glucose tolerance tests and see what the consultant says – they’ll know a lot more than your gp. Good luck xxx

Ruth asks…
How can I get on a healthy diet?
Well I work out alot, but sadley I haven’t gotten the results I wanted,I know a healthy diet and watching everything you eat and how much you eat is important but I want to know how important is it? I read a comment somewhere that being on a healthy diet is like 70% of the process of getting into shape( I want to get more buff and ripped) and that 30 % is exercise.is that true?? If not please explain. Also what do you recomend I do to get started on a healthy diet? Btw I come from a big but poor family, healthy food is sometimes out of the question, my parents mostley cook meals that are more for getting you full wether it’s healthy or not.what kind of healthy foods do you recomend I buy? That aren’t too expensive but can get you full? Sadley all of us have high cholesterol and some are borderline for diabetes,it’s horrible!! I want me and my family to start taking care of ourselves and stop being so irresponsible with the type of food we eat.I would really appreciate an answer, thank you for your time.

Sara answers:
You can save a lot of money by eating potatoes. They have done studies on people who ate nothing but potatoes for 6 months and had perfect health. Plus, they never get tired of the potatoes. Potatoes have all the vitamins, minerals, protein, and energy you need. They are just lacking fat. Another thing that you can do is eat more beans instead of animal products. This will help you get more protein at a cheap price. Rice and oatmeal are cheap also and fill you up. Then, if you can afford it try to get some fresh or frozen fruits or vegetables. Just get the ones on sale. This will help you to get more balanced meals.
